One Response to “Stan Goff”

A terrific lecture cum seminar from Mr Goff. I found his whole presentation bith academic and accessible. His illustrations were absolutely spot on as was his concise historical analysis, even down to more arbitrary matters such as economic foreign policy (which are not easy to tie down. Read Paul Krugman, for example). Goff’s position on an exit plan for IRaq really appealed to me since it deconstructed the more popular discourse on what an exit strategy might result in. This is important. However, Goff could have elaborated further on this point by way of illustrating the hurdles as well as the possibilites equally. His comparison to Vietnam on this issue, however, was exemplary (incidentally, for years, the British Government fed us the lies that a pull-out from Northern Ireland would only lead to chaos). I feel that what Goff was alluding to is that the declaration of an exit plan would facilitate a deal between warring factions (the resistance and the US military) and thereby allow the resistance to facilitate its own exclusion of Salafist Jihadists. This would appear somewhat realistic given that the resistance is in the majority and the JIhadists the converse. Hiwever, there is of course the issue of how many Iraqi Sunnis have affiliated themselves with the Salafists, a valid point indeed. Still, I do resonate with Goff’s reasoning even if it is somewhat radical (or is it?).
